What makes a good quiz ?
A good hosting personality, along with a great set of questions is the perfect starting place.
You don’t have to have a funny bone and great sense of humour to be a quiz host, although it does help …
Having a backbone and being able to make fun out of yourself is more of an advantage than anything else – Don’t take yourself too seriously.
Afterall, being a quizhost is a FUN job / activity to do.
You get to be the centre of attention for a few hours and if you are the type of person who likes some ‘banter’, then you are already ideally suited for the role of quiz host !
When you run a quiz event, there’s a great sense of satisfaction, which comes from knowing you’ve done a great job.
You can make it look easy and effortless by putting in some prep work before hand and this helps with the smooth running of the quiz.
Having a range of questions from easy, medium and difficult will help to cater for the majority of your crowd.
Don’t make all questions super difficult (even if you’ve got a hardened quiz crowd), as you’ll alienate those who come along for the fun aspect of the quiz.
I went to one quiz night, where every question came from ‘University Challenge’ or ‘Mastermind’ – It was no fun at all !

Planning goes a LONG Way !
Consider how many questions you’ll ask in the time available, allowing time between rounds (especially so people can go to the bar, if being help in a public house).
Pick a varied selection of quiz questions, levels and subjects, so that there is something in there for everyone.
Read out loud, each of the questions beforehand.
Check any tricky pronunciations.
Make sure your timings work.
Check the answers are all still relevant and correct.
Some questions can be outdated, such as highest / fastest / smallest / oldest styles of questions, so always cross reference online.
Could the question be misinterpreted / Is there more than one answer ?
Have your questions printed out and ready to be presented and make notes if needed on your handout.
Stock Up On Supplies
Make sure you have enough pens and printed answer sheets for all the players/teams who will be playing.
Make sure you have a good reliable printer and one that is economical run, if you are going to be doing a lot of printer. This is the one I use !
Everyone loves to play for a prize too. It doesn’t matter how small the prize, it is best to have a prize on offer.
